The superfluous 80’s references added nothing. I typically enjoy adventure stories (even if they are predictable). Giving students a symbol to trace through reading and then culminating with a project on the symbol's link to an abstract idea (motif) and the author's argument in portraying this idea (theme) provides students with a way to approach literature cohesively. This is not the sort of response one might expect from members of a so-called “visual generation.” Yet conversations with colleagues at professional conferences indicate that this sort of resistance to graphic novels is not uncommon.

Neufeld shows the story through five (real-life) New Orleans residents to whom we became completely attached, which is precisely the point. It is not a super hero story, it is a story of the Holocaust and a boy who has to grow up quickly in the midst of the most inhumane conditions to not only survive but save the woman he loves and himself. This process usually took me a week and the end result was a massive 50-page printed document that I would revise in red ink as I wrote the first draft.
