By the period 1400 to 1450 numerous Italian intellectuals agreed with Petrarch's criticism of the Middle Ages and support for a classical revival. A common example was when a poorer person begged for money. My first thought as a scientist (besides ‘holy fucking shit’) would be “well, I don’t know of any controlled way of opening and closing the earth like that, I wonder if I can figure it out” and “maybe these beings just look like demon hordes to me because my perceptual systems translate them into something I can conceive of.” Even in the case of God indirectly being observed as having created a world that looked like an all-good, all-powerful, all-knowing being had designed it, I would still study what information do I have about this creator based on its creation – what can I learn about this intelligent designer, or in Dawkins’ catchphrase for what scientists do: “who designed the designer?” God could be the possible best contingent explanation for that world, but for a scientist it wouldn’t stop there.
